How to calculate square footage
Add rooms as rectangles, circles or triangles and total the area in square feet, square yards and square metres.
- Choose a shape for the room. Use a rectangle for most rooms, a circle for round areas and a triangle for tapered leftover spaces.
- Enter the dimensions. Type feet and inches, or switch to metres. A closet or alcove gets its own length and width.
- Add every area you will cover. Use Add a room for additional rooms, closets and bump-outs. The total is the sum of those areas.
- Add optional flooring waste. Enter a waste percentage only when you want extra flooring for cuts or pattern matching. Do not use floor area to estimate paint.
- Read the total in three units. The same total is shown in ft², yd² and m² so you can match the unit on a product label.
A 12 ft × 10 ft rectangle is 120 ft², 13.33 yd² and 11.15 m² before waste. Closets and alcoves should be added as their own rooms when you will cover them.
Square footage FAQ
How do I calculate square footage of a room?
For a rectangle, multiply length by width. A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 ft². A circle uses π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A triangle uses base × height ÷ 2. Enter feet and inches, or metres, then add each closet or alcove as its own shape so the total is the sum of the parts.
Do I include closets/alcoves?
Include any area you intend to cover, and leave out areas you will not. Add closets, alcoves and bump-outs as extra rooms instead of forcing one rectangle over the whole plan. Subtract a closet only when you added the surrounding room as a larger rectangle that already contains it.
How do I convert ft² to yd² / m²?
Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. Multiply square feet by 0.09290304 to get square metres — that factor is 0.3048 m per foot, squared. The calculator reports all three units from the same total.
Should I add waste for flooring or paint?
Flooring waste is optional. Many installs add about 5–10% for cuts and pattern matching; enter that percentage only when you want extra material. Paint is not based on floor area. Walls, doors, windows and coats need a separate wall-area takeoff.
How do I total multiple rooms?
Add each room with its own name, shape and dimensions, then read the combined total. Waste, if you enter it, applies once to the sum. You can compare the neat area with the area after waste before you buy flooring.
