Volume and units
For a rectangle, volume is length × width × depth. A circle uses π × radius² × depth. A trapezoidal trench uses length × (top width + bottom width) ÷ 2 × depth. Imperial depth is entered in inches; metric depth in centimeters.
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. One foot is 0.3048 meters. Calculations use decimal arithmetic and keep precision until display or purchasing-rounding steps.
Waste is different from shrinkage
Purchase volume = neat volume ÷ (1 − shrinkage fraction) × (1 + waste fraction). For example, 10 cubic yards of finished material with 20% volume loss needs 12.5 loose cubic yards before waste. Concrete has zero compaction allowance in this tool.
Bag yield and material weight
Bags = purchase cubic feet ÷ bag yield, rounded up to the next whole bag. The concrete default is 0.6 cubic feet per 80-pound bag, matching the manufacturer’s approximate yield for QUIKRETE Concrete Mix. Other products can differ.

Weight = loose purchase volume × density in US short tons per cubic yard. The initial density values (2.025 concrete, 1.4 gravel, 0.35 mulch) are editable illustrative assumptions from our planning brief, not verified product specifications. Mulch bag weight is unspecified by default. A dry concrete bag’s weight is not the weight of an equivalent volume of ready-mix.
Orders and delivery
Bulk volume rounds upward to the entered order increment. It is split across trucks using the entered volume capacity. Each truck adds a delivery fee and, if configured, a short-load fee equal to missing yards below the threshold × fee per yard. Confirm payload weight, order minimums, taxes, unloading time, access, and other charges separately.
Price fields start blank. Zero delivery fees mean no delivery charges have been entered, not that delivery is free. Local examples show individual supplier material prices and service limitations; they are never a regional average.
Base and reinforcement
Base volume is calculated separately without a waste or compaction allowance. For rectangular reinforcement grids, bar counts use the interior dimensions after edge cover, spacing rounded upward to whole gaps, and one additional bar per direction. Added cut/lap percentage is an input. This is a quantity helper, not a reinforcement design. Base and rebar costs are excluded.
Saved projects
Each section retains its own assumptions. Material totals group sections only when their density, pricing, and delivery settings agree. Costs and loads remain per section; combined orders need supplier confirmation.
Source review
Published local pages use reviewed supplier sources with dates and geographic scope. Unverified pages stay out of the build. The content pipeline records a review date and flags source reviews older than 90 days.
